Cranberry has been a popular supplement for people who have a history of Urinary Tract Infection (UTI). It’s believed to possess anti-bacterial properties that can cure the said infection. Aside from this, many people drink cranberry juice and take in cranberry supplements because of the fruit’s health-boosting properties.
Cats are also prone to UTI. This is why you’ll see that a lot of cranberry supplements have appeared in the market, catering to pet owners who have cats suffering from the discomfort. These supplements are available in powder and pill forms that are both easily digestible.
The possible reason behind the belief in cranberry’s medicinal prowess lies in its chemical components. Cranberries contain compounds that can make your urine more acidic (lower pH levels), making your body uninhabitable to bacteria. This prevents them from multiplying and causing further harm to your body.
A study published in the 1984 paper of the Journal of Urology revealed that cranberries contain the compound named proanthocyanidins. The said component was found to be responsible for fighting E. coli and other bacteria that may cause UTI.
However, some studies show that this miracle power of cranberries may be overrated. Its ability to treat E. coli hasn’t been proven by repeated clinical trials. They’re also not as efficient as antibiotics readily available in pharmacies. More conclusive tests are yet to be done to quantify its effect in fighting UTI.
It is true, though, that it can add another layer of defense against UTI. Although, by itself alone, there’s still uncertainty regarding its success in fighting against the disease.
Research on the effectiveness of cranberries in preventing UTI in cats is yet to be proven. There’s no solid evidence that cranberries can cure or even prevent UTI. However, aside from the chance that it can treat UTI, these supplements can also help boost your pet’s immune system.
The most common culprit for UTI is the bacteria Escherichia coli or most commonly known as E. coli. The bacteria comes from infected food which then settles on the host’s bladder and urethra. UTI causes discomfort while peeing. But with the help of cranberry juice, E. coli won’t have a chance to cause further harm to the body.
Some studies show, though, that drinking cranberry juice lowers the pH level of the urinary tract by only a diminutive and almost insignificant amount. This change in the pH level is said to have no adverse effect against bacteria like E. coli. But many people claim to have regained health after ingesting cranberry supplements and juices for quite some time, thus the popularity of the product.
Whichever is true, it doesn’t really matter. That’s because cranberries still contain other components like anthocyanins, ellagic acid, and proanthocyanidins which are all powerful antioxidants.
Anthocyanins are strong antioxidants even more potent than those found in vitamin E supplements. A hundred grams of cranberries contain around 50-80 milligrams of anthocyanins. Proanthocyanidins, on the other hand, reinforce the blood vessels and increases oxygen delivery throughout the body. Laboratory tests have found that ellagic acid can kill cancer cells. Aside from these compounds, cranberries are rich in dietary fiber, vitamin C, vitamin K, manganese, and tannins.
Cranberry seed oils and flours are commonplace in food stores as they’re good alternatives for omega 3 supplements. Cranberries can also help reduce plaque, bad breath, and gum disease.
For your beloved pets, it’s best to look for cranberry supplements that come from producers who don’t use harmful chemicals in their manufacturing processes. Binders like dextrose, stearic acid, and maltose are dangerous additives that may harm your pet’s health. Also, consult your veterinarian before you feed your pets with cranberry supplements.
The dosage of cranberry supplements you should give to your pets must be controlled. For cats, a hundred milligrams for at most three times a day is enough.
